Dutch’s Burgers (817-927-5522; www.dutchshamburgers.com) 3009 South University Drive, Fort Worth 76109. Open: Mon. through Thurs. 11 AM–9 PM, Fri. and Sat. 11 AM–10 PM, Sun. 11 AM–9 PM. Named after the revered Texas Christian University coach Dutch Meyers, who was the head football coach from 1934 to 1952 and the head basketball coach from 1934 to 1937, it seems fitting that this cool college hangout is located directly across from its alma mater. Serving hearty burgers, thick shakes, and peppery onion rings, Dutch’s creates a winning trifecta that is enough to land itself in a hall of fame. The Linebacker is a huge double-meat cheeseburger that comes with the standard fixings and a choice of fries, tater tots, and onion rings and will leave even the hungriest of appetites filled. The hickory barbeque and bacon burger is a first-stringer, but the bacon bleu cheese burger is the star that scores big. There is also a chicken and roasted green chile sandwich and a portobello veggie burger (roasted in balsamic vinegar) for those who prefer not to eat beef; you can also order the old Texas classic, Frito pie, for something different. The old building has lots of character, wooden floors and walls and counter seating along the window, as well as a lovely shaded patio in the back for outdoor dining and throwing back a few cold ones, even if it does face the parking lot. Speaking of parking, look for the small parking lot in back, because it is a tight fit everywhere else.
